Bad Bug's Pop Picks
The world's on fire. Here's what we're doing to distract ourselves.
Hey there, Bad Bugs!
In our never-ending quest to keep you, our readers, informed and entertained, we’re mixing things up to see what you like. So here are some fresh pop culture picks that we’ve been enjoying. Feel free to pop into the comments to let us know your thoughts!
Movie: Weapons
What is it about former comedians-turned-horror writers that makes for such unique flicks? Weapons is the second horror offering from Zach Cregge, who started out as part of the comedy troupe The Whitest Kids U' Know. His 2022 film, Barbarian, was…equally unhinged weird and fun.
The IMDB synopsis, for those of you who may not be in the know: “When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance.” From the trailer, it’s safe to say that you’d have absolutely no idea what happened to these kids - and not knowing makes this one wild ride. Stellar performances all around, especially from Julia Garner and Josh Brolin. But extra points for the character that is creepiness personified, Aunt Gladys (played by Amy Madigan)
This one really stuck with us, and had us thinking about the ending for days afterward. If you haven’t seen Weapons yet, do yourself a favor and go in as spoiler-free as possible!
TV: Alien: Earth
Xenomorphs have always been a terrifying onscreen presence. So, setting up a show where they’re the LEAST creepy thing you have to worry about? Chef’s kiss! While we don’t want to spoil too much of this fantastic series, the basic premise is that a Weyland-Yutani ship crashes on Earth and, of course, the vessel was researching all SORTS of alien critters. No doubt your social media feeds have been full of this fella:
What a cutie, right?! But the other thing that sets this show apart from the rest of the Alien franchise is its take on synthetic people. The stories have played around with different takes on them before, but never so effectively, and with so many at once. An added bonus is that Timothy Olyphant has been pure perfection as Kirsh, their team leader, in a role that’s far removed from his usual tough-guy typecast in shows like Justified.
If you’ve been on the fence about watching this show, there’s never been a better time to check it out - the season finale airs next Tuesday. Go get some!
Comic: Geezer #3
For people who are equally enamored with comics AND music, it’s amazing to find a book that masterfully blends the two. Not only does Geezer have a comedic story about the ‘90s Britpop scene, but everything about the physical release is music-related: the book itself is square and about the size of a 7” record, and comes in a faux record store bag. And the swag bag not only has a pin, stickers and such, but comes with a Geezer-branded plastic earplug case and a wristband from that time you saw them at Reading ‘94! Geezer - both the comic AND the band - will rawk your socks off. Written by William Potter (of the real-life band CUD) and illustrated by Philip Bond (Vimanarama, Kill Your Boyfriend & TONS of other cool comics).

Music: Earworm Corner Playlist!
Speaking of music…we made you a playlist! Here’s a couple hours of new music, all released in the last month or so. One of our faves from this crop is the new 3-song EP from the Iron Roses, AGITPOP. And much like everything else we do, this playlist is a bit NSFW.
And just a reminder that we have some amazing books funding on Kickstarter right now - click the links below to check them out!
That’s all for this time! Head to the comments and let us know your thoughts.
Bugs and Kisses,
The Bad Bug Crew
